Critical Limb Threatening Ischemia

Chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI), sometimes called critical limb ischemia, is the most serious form of peripheral artery disease (PAD). CLTI happens when blood flow to the leg or foot is so poor that it causes pain at rest, non-healing wounds, or even gangrene.

What can be done?

  • Early diagnosis and treatment are critical. Treatment may include medications, wound care, and procedures to restore blood flow (revascularization).

  • Revascularization (surgery or minimally invasive procedures) can help save the limb and improve quality of life.

  • Managing risk factors like diabetes, high blood pressure, and quitting smoking can help prevent CLTI and improve outcomes.

CLTI is a serious condition that requires urgent medical attention. Learning about CLTI helps patients recognize symptoms early and seek treatment to prevent limb loss and improve survival.
